Happy National Connecticut Day! – August 10th
People often call Connecticut a small state. I disagree. Connecticut isn’t a small state. It’s one big “city “ with 169 neighborhoods.
Each community has its own history, traditions, and personality. Together, they create something extraordinary—a place with the heart of a small town and the impact of a global leader.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, Connecticut earned the nickname The Provision State, supplying General Washington’s army with the food, equipment, and determination that helped secure our nation’s independence. We’ve always been a state that answers the call.
That spirit still defines us. CT may occupy a small corner of the map, but we’ve always occupied an outsized place in America’s story.
For 250 years we’ve consistently done more than our size would suggest.
- We provisioned a revolution.
- We helped write democracy.
- We built America’s industrial strength.
- We helped build the modern insurance industry.
Our colleges and universities educated many of America’s important leaders from politics to educators, to physicians to social justice advocates and now tomorrow’s leaders. Our innovators and entrepreneurs change industries.
CT continues its tradition of supplying world-class submarines, aircraft engines, helicopters, medicines, advanced technologies, and leaders that shape America’s future and keep it strong. Connecticut continues to rank among the nation’s leaders in patents per capita—a reminder that innovation isn’t just part of our history; it’s part of our future. And CT’s next chapter may be even more exciting.
Connecticut’s combination of engineering talent, universities, healthcare systems, and manufacturers positions it to become a leader in applied AI. Factories are becoming digital, automated, and connected. Connecticut companies are already producing many of the sophisticated components needed for aerospace, defense, and medical technology.
The state’s hospitals, universities, and research organizations are well positioned to advance personalized medicine and medical innovation. Several real-time initiatives in Quantum Computing & Cybersecurity are underway at Connecticut’s research institutions and defense industries, creating hubs for quantum tech.
Our colleges and universities educated many of America’s important leaders from politics to educators, to physicians to social justice advocates and now tomorrow’s leaders. Our innovators and entrepreneurs change industries. Our basketball and hockey teams celebrate success as national champions that inspire the next generations. And yes…we make some of the best pizza in America.
But Connecticut’s greatest contribution has never been what we make.
It’s who we are.
We’re neighbors who look out for one another. Volunteers who step up. Teachers who inspire. Healthcare professionals who heal. Business owners who invest in their communities. Public servants who dedicate themselves to something bigger than themselves.
That’s why Connecticut has never been defined by its 5,526 square miles. It’s been defined by its significance. Today, let’s celebrate the 169 communities that remind us greatness isn’t measured on a map. It’s measured by the difference its people make.
I’m proud to call Connecticut home. Happy National Connecticut Day!
